Sclerotherapy is an injectible therapy for both varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution directly into the vein using a very small needle and syringe. The solution causes irritation in the lining of the blood vessel. This causes the blood vessel to swell and stick together, and it causes the blood in the area to clot. In time, the blood vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view, thus eliminating the visible varicose or spider vein.
A number of veins can be injected in one visit, depending on your needs and your medical condition. No anesthetic is needed yet there may be some mild discomfort following the injection. Typically, this in-office procedure takes fewer than 30 minutes to perform. And, in terms of recovery, there may be some bruising at the injection site and possibly some itching in the affected veins. Otherwise, patients resume normal activities immediately following the procedure. For more information on sclerotherapy, please contact us for a consultation today.
